Anyway, the other day I found this little guy, the Schipperke. They used to do guard dog jobs on barges in Belgium and their names means 'Little Skipper'. How cute! They're about 30cm high and are sometimes born without tails. Maybe a natural selection thing on the barges (where tails can get caught in things and stepped on)?
The fabulous dog book The Dog Selector tells me they are great dogs for beginner dog owners (me), and they seem a good size to fit in my bike basket (important for long distance travel). They say dogs look like their owners, so I figure why not get a dog that is like me to start with. The description reads: very loyal, suspicious of strangers, needs plenty of exercise, brush weekly, likes to show off.
