Even though he lies underground
pour pitch on dirty-tongued Parthenios
who vomited such spit at the Muses,
such foul linen of filthy elegies:
he was so mad he said the Odyssey
was mud and the Iliad was shit.
Therefore the dark Furies have him
in middle Kokytos with his neck
in a collar like a dog's.
Poor old Parthenios, cursed by the living and imprisoned in a river of wailing, and all because he hates Homer.
Any reader of this blog over the last month or so would have a fair idea of what I think about the Odyssey. I have to confess to siding with Parthenios in his opinion of the Iliad (and I know it says far more about me than it does about the poem). Just recently though, my opinion of the Iliad has changed a little, and another day I will explain why.
