Here's Garuda! He's a god eagle who appears in both Buddist and Hindu mythology, and here he is giving the Lord Vishnu a lift.
Garuda's in the epic poem Mahabharata, bursting from an egg and doing jobs for the gods. To get his mum out of trouble, he undertakes to steal the elixir of immortality from the gods. He does this (of course) but it's all a bit tricky and there are a few twists and turns.
The Mahabharata is India's national epic, a very very long poem which also contains another famous epic poem, Bhagavad Gita (often published separately). I haven't read either poem yet, but there's a jolly good review of the Mahabharata on LibraryThing and that explains it all very nicely indeed.
